Supervised Independent Living Program

Our Supervised Independent Living Program (SIL) provides valuable living and learning experiences for young adults aging out of foster care. Our resident-led and staff-supported environment inspires confidence and self-sufficiency so they can live independent, successful lives after leaving our care.

Resident Support

Our program offers an independent living experience where residents will have the freedom of adulthood with an available support system, opening opportunities for residents to:

• Set and Achieve Goals
• Learn Independent Living Skills
• Manage Finances
• Build Healthy Relationships

 Meet Lauren

Lauren is a 19-year old girl in our Adolescent Services program who, up until now, had been terrified to turn 18 for fear of aging out of the foster care system. She knows that more than 25% of former youth in foster care become homeless within two to four years of leaving the system.

Our Supervised Independent Living program has brought her solace, because she knows she will have a place to call home while she learns to support herself after foster care.

Intake Criteria

Cumberland has prepared three living spaces for 15 residents. Placement is made possible through partnerships with agencies like Our Community Our Kids, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, and other foster care agencies statewide. Eligibility for extended foster care is based on the following:

  • Has signed the voluntary extended foster care agreement

  • Must be 18-22 years old

  • Enrollment at a college or university, in a high school diploma or GED program, or be employed at least 80 hours a month.

*Cumberland’s Supervised Independent Living Services Program does not accept private placement.
