Children’s Residential Program

Treatment Services

Our Treatment Services program offers therapeutic structure and support to teen girls with emotional disorders who have experienced severe trauma. In addition to intensive counseling with our on-site therapeutic team, our program focuses on teaching social skills and relationship building. We aim to help our residents develop positive coping mechanisms so they can heal and grow from their experiences.

*Treatment Services does not accept private placements.

Resident Support

• Serves teen girls, ages 11-17, with significant trauma histories, who would benefit from a structured, less-restrictive therapeutic environment
• Program focuses on intensive counseling, relationship building and social and emotional coping skills
• Treatment Services, Shelter Services, and Adolescent Services often work in collaboration to provide care for our residents and are referred to as our Children's Residential Program

Meet Susie

Susie is a 16-year old girl who joined our Treatment Services program after a long series of abuse and neglect from her guardians. When she arrived at our agency, she was terrified to sleep and refused to take off her glasses at night, for fear of needing to escape as quickly as possible. Our staff worked with Susie to understand her past trauma so that we could mediate a solution for sleeping comfortably, without her glasses.

Cumberland is not Susie’s first placement by any means, but we were the first that made her feel heard and allowed her to sleep soundly.

Shelter Services

Our Shelter Services Program, housed in Currie Long Cottage, is often the first stop for youth who have been removed from their homes by Child Protective Services. Our focus is on crisis intervention. We offer safety and stability while working to address the basic, immediate needs of each of our residents.

  • We accept children and teens, ages 5-18, who have been immediately removed from their homes based on an abuse or neglect allegation

  • Preference is given to those ages 11-18, however, when possible, we work to accommodate sibling groups with younger siblings to prevent separations in care

  • Placement is available 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week based on availability

  • Placement preference is given to residents whose county of origin is in the North Texas area (case-by-case exceptions)

  • We are one of the only placement options in our 19-county region with the capacity and program design to keep siblings together

  • We do not offer private community placement

Shelter Services, Treatment Services, and Adolescent Services often work in collaboration to provide care for our residents and are referred to as our Children's Residential Program.

Meet Brad

Brad is the oldest of five siblings who joined our Shelter Services program after entering the foster care system abruptly, without warning at 3:00 in the morning one autumn night. At 15, he has been taking care of his younger siblings for as long as he can remember. As one of the only placement options in our region with the program designed to keep siblings together, Cumberland was able to immediately place all five siblings into our Shelter Services program, reducing the stress of separation and preventing them from sleeping on the floor of a CPS office.

Intake Criteria

Cumberland Youth and Family Services, formerly Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home, accepts placement of children who are in the care of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) and Our Community Our Kids (OCOK) and have been removed from their caregivers due to abuse and/or neglect. Information provided by DFPS or OCOK is evaluated by professional-level program staff to ensure our agency can reasonably meet the child’s physical, medical, mental health, recreational, educational, and emotional needs.

*Cumberland’s Shelter Services Program does not accept private placement.
