Cumberland Youth & Family Services Foster Family Spotlight: Jacob & Sonia

Cumberland Youth & Family Services Foster Family

Did you know that in 2023, more than 2,000 youth were in foster care in North Texas, and 77% of them were forced to move to other regions due to limited available foster care placements? In our community, the need for foster parents is urgent, and Cumberland Youth & Family Services recognized this great need by creating our Foster Care and Adoption Program.

Meet Jacob and Sonia, one of Cumberland’s foster families who answered the call and became licensed foster parents. We’re so excited to share their story here today!

Foster Parent Interview

Why did you become foster parents?

“We became foster parents because we wanted to provide a safe and loving home to children in need. We were ready to grow our family and felt fostering with the potential for adoption gave us an opportunity to grow our family while also providing for children in need.  We knew there was a great need for foster and adoption families in Texas and we had the space in our homes and in our hearts to help out, so we went for it.”

What is your favorite part of being a foster parent?

“We know that it won’t always be easy, but we have loved every part of being a foster parent. Sometimes, you only get a limited amount of time with a child, so we cherish every moment of it.”

What has been your greatest need as a foster family?

“The greatest need we have experienced so far is needing to get new/certain supplies and clothing for children at the last moment since you don’t always know the age or any specifics of the child. Sometimes, the information you get told prior to placement isn’t complete, so it can be hard to prepare in advance. We are grateful for the help we have received from the foster community in North Texas, as they have provided us with clothing and other necessities on short notice more than once.”

What is your greatest hope with fostering?

“Our greatest hope is that each child will end up in a safe and loving household, whether that be with family, with us, or with someone else. We also hope that we can bring greater awareness to being a foster parent and encourage more families to consider opening their houses. We would like to grow our family as well if that is the right place for a child to be.”

Why did you choose Cumberland’s Foster Care and Adoption program?

“We are grateful to be working with Cumberland. Cumberland is open-minded and willing to work with a diverse range of people, which is very important to us. We also knew Jennifer [Maddox] from a different agency and wanted to work with her.”

Thank you, Jacob and Sonia, for your time. We are inspired by your dedication to being foster parents and look forward to supporting you on your journey as a Cumberland foster family!
