From Foster Care to Olympian

The Olympics have come to a close, yet even as these incredible athletes return home, the world is still celebrating their accomplishments. But for some competitors, their stories of resiliency go far beyond their time on the track or in the gym. Two American Olympic medalists were once children in foster care, and their inspiring stories show just how important the right support and opportunities are in shaping a successful future.

Power in Belonging

Silver Medalist Kenny Bednarek's journey from a foster child to an Olympic athlete is a testament to the strength and determination that can emerge from challenging beginnings. After experiencing abuse and neglect, Kenny faced uncertainty in foster care. But his life took a positive turn when he and his twin brother were adopted at the age of four by their mother, Mary, who provided them with the love and stability they needed. Despite the early struggles, Kenny found belonging and purpose in sports, particularly track and field, which became a powerful outlet for him to channel his energy and emotions.

Reflecting on his past, Kenny said, “Every single previous version of me is still a part of me, including the trauma from my childhood. I own my past and my present. I am who I am, and I’ve achieved what I’ve achieved by buckling down and doing the really tough work — work on myself, working through emotional trauma and setbacks, and tough, hard work on the track.”

As a way to give back and inspire others, Kenny now partners with the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption to raise awareness for children in foster care. Kenny's story is not just about athletic success; it's about overcoming challenges, embracing his identity, and the transformative power of family and self-belief.

 A Second Shot at Life

Simone Biles' path from a child in foster care to the world’s most decorated gymnast demonstrates both her resilience and drive to succeed. Born to a mother struggling with substance abuse, Simone and her siblings entered the foster care system when she was 3 years old. She was later adopted by her grandfather and his wife, creating a home where she felt safe and supported.

“Having my parents and that support made me who I am today,” Biles said. “Being separated from my biological mom, being placed in foster care before I officially got adopted by my grandparents, it just set me up for a better route at life. I’m forever grateful for that because I definitely got a second shot at life.”

Her early experiences have fueled her commitment to supporting foster children and advocating for the importance of connections with supportive foster and adoptive parents. Through partnerships with organizations like Friends of the Children, Simone has used her platform to bring awareness to youth in foster care and the benefits of mentors and other trusted adults. Simone Biles stands as a powerful example of how overcoming adversity can lead to extraordinary accomplishments and how giving back can make a significant impact on the lives of others.

 Change Through Saftey & Stability

The common thread running through both Olympians' stories is the impact that foster and adoptive parents have on foster youth. Through safety and stability, these youth are empowered to heal, grow, and dream beyond past circumstances.

Cumberland’s Foster Care and Adoption Program Director, Jennifer Maddox, recently shared that “the attachment that a child creates with a foster or an adoptive parent can change the trajectory of their life. Through the secure relationships developed with their foster or adoptive parents, I’ve witnessed youths move on to college, begin military careers, or start a rewarding career that might not have happened without those positive adult relationships.”
