How You Can Help During Child Abuse Prevention Month
At Cumberland Youth and Family Services, we work hard to provide safe spaces for youth in foster care after they have experienced some form of abuse or neglect. In honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month, we will be highlighting some of the ways you can help keep the youth of your community safe. Here is everything you need to know about Child Abuse Prevention Month:
About Child Abuse Prevention Month
Each year, April serves as a month to recognize the importance of communities working together to prevent child abuse. The goal is to strengthen families to prevent child abuse and neglect. Studies show that an economic downturn can lead to an uptick in child abuse. In 2020 alone, 1,586 children were victims of abuse and neglect in Denton County, with three fatalities.
How Our Children's Residential Program Helps
We work to keep the youth in foster care safe and to keep families together. Our Children’s Residential Program accomplishes these goals by providing youth with a safe place to sleep, treatment services and all of their basic needs. We work with our residents to provide a sense of normalcy and prepare them for life after foster care, with the overall goal of crisis intervention.
Volunteer Opportunities at Cumberland
As an ever-growing agency, we are always in need of volunteers and economic assistance to provide our residents with the above-and-beyond care they need. Whether you can donate monthly, tutor our residents or support our events, you will be directly impacting your community in a big way. Please reach out to us if you are interested in volunteering at Cumberland.
No matter how you choose to stand up against child abuse, your community will thank you for your commitment. These kinds of child abuse cases are far too common in Texas, but there are a number of great ways in which we can all work together to prevent them in the future.
